Custom terrain

Explanation on how custom terrain is used in Vind

Written by Simon Andersson

Terrain is one of the most fundamental features that affects the properties of a wind farm. Vind will make use of a global terrain that is described here, but we also support upload of custom terrain. This can be used in case the base terrain is deemed to be outdated, of too low quality or some other use case.

Different analyses requires different amount of terrain, and in order to support this we will always rely on the global terrain as a base line and then add the custom terrain on top of this.

The following images taken from the "Viewshed" analysis describes the process.

  1. The base terrain

  2. Custom terrain

  3. Base terrain + custom terrain

We support having a mosaic of custom terrain, so you can have multiple custom terrain files within the area and the analysis will use them in a prioritised order, where the base terrain will have the lowest priority

Analyses that currently does not support custom terrain

View park and View park shadows does currently not take the custom terrain into account, and is only using the standard base terrain.
